Keep Your Flutter Version Current

As of May 2026, the current version of Flutter is 3.44, but that doesn’t mean all apps will immediately upgrade to that. Our customers run on a wide variety of Flutter builds. We recently worked with a customer who was using Flutter 3.27 to build and ship new production releases. That version came out in December 2024. You don’t need to run on the cutting edge of releases, but we suggest that you follow an N-1 strategy. 

The ecosystem moves with Flutter

Flutter moves quickly. In 2025, the team shipped four major releases with meaningful updates, not just minor housekeeping. We saw Impeller become the default renderer on Android, Swift Package Manager support land for iOS, edge-to-edge layout improvements for Android 15, and significant performance work throughout. Each one of those changes matters for production apps.

More importantly, the packages you depend on move with the framework. When a third-party maintainer ships a fix for a memory leak, adds support for a new platform API, or patches a CVE, they're typically targeting a recent stable Flutter version. If you're many releases behind, you may find yourself unable to take that update. That means you may be silently running a version of a package that has known issues you can't fix without also upgrading Flutter.

This is the compounding problem with version drift. It rarely causes acute failures. Instead, it quietly accumulates. An unresolvable pub conflict here, a missing API there, a security advisory you can't adopt without a large upgrade project. By the time it becomes painful, the gap is large enough that closing it feels risky.

Upgrading feels scary

The most common reason teams stay on old Flutter versions is that upgrading feels risky. They have a stable app and a working CI pipeline. It’s not broken, no need to fix it, and time can be better spent shipping features. Upgrading Flutter means potentially breaking things, dealing with API changes, and re-testing a release. None of that sounds appealing when you have a backlog of features to ship.

That's a reasonable instinct, but delaying upgrades gets more expensive over time, not less. Upgrading from 3.38 to 3.41 is a much smaller lift than upgrading from 3.27 to 3.41. The longer you wait, the more breaking changes accumulate and the more your dependencies have moved on from where you are.

The N-1 approach: a pattern that actually works

A lot of the healthiest teams we see don't actually chase the bleeding edge. Instead they follow an intentional N-1 cadence. When a new Flutter version ships, that's the signal to move up to the previous stable release, not the brand new one.

In practice, that looks like this: Flutter 3.44 went live last week. For many teams, that's the green light to finally move to 3.41.9 (the previous stable release). The 3.41 release has been in the wild for a few months. The ecosystem had time to catch up. Package maintainers have updated their dependencies, edge cases have surfaced and been patched. You're not a pioneer on a fresh release, you have a body of community experience to draw on.

This approach gives you the best of both worlds: you stay close enough to the current release that the upgrade is manageable, and you get the stability that comes from letting the ecosystem settle. N-1 keeps you only a few months behind, not a year or more and that gap makes all the difference when it comes to package compatibility and getting support.

The key is building a repeatable pattern around upgrades. Treat Flutter releases the way good teams treat dependency audits: scheduled, routine, and not a big deal because you never let the gap get large.

The good news is that the Flutter team is making it easier to plan your upgrades by committing to a predictable release cadence. In their 2026 roadmap, the team explicitly committed to a minimum of 4 stable releases and 12 beta releases for both Flutter and Dart this year, with increased investment in test automation to ensure each release meets their stability bar. They've also published branch cutoff dates and release windows publicly so the community can plan ahead. That's a meaningful shift. This means you can actually put Flutter upgrades on a calendar rather than watching for a surprise release. 

The broader principle

Using outdated tooling to ship new products puts you in a strange position. You're relying on a foundation that the people maintaining it have moved past. Flutter's team, the package maintainers you depend on, and tools like Shorebird are all working against the current stable release. Staying far behind means you're increasingly on your own.

We focus our engineering and fixes on the latest stable Flutter version. When we land improvements to patching reliability, new features, or expand support in other ways, those changes don't get backported to older releases. If you're on Flutter 3.27, you're not getting those improvements and if something breaks, our ability to help you is limited. 

The Flutter ecosystem is one of the strongest arguments for using Flutter. A thriving set of packages, a responsive framework team, and a community that's actively building production infrastructure around the framework. But you only benefit from that ecosystem if you're actually participating in it.

Flutter 3.44 shipped this week. It's a good time to check where you are and come up with your team's update strategy.
